CPAP & BiPAP Resource Center
1. Getting Started: Your First 30 Days
- The Desensitization Technique: If the mask feels claustrophobic, try wearing it while watching TV or reading for 20 minutes during the day — without the machine on. This helps your brain realize you are safe.
- The Ramp Button: Learn to use the "Ramp" feature on your device. It starts the air at a lower, gentler pressure to help you fall asleep before full therapeutic pressure kicks in.
- Distilled Water Only: Always use distilled water in your humidifier chamber to prevent mineral buildup and extend the life of your machine.
2. Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Likely Cause | The Fix |
| Air leaking into eyes | Mask is too loose or too old | Adjust the top straps first. If the cushion is over 3 months old, it may need replacement. |
| Dry nose or throat | Humidity setting is too low | Increase the humidity level on your machine. Consider a heated tube if you notice "rainout" (water in the tube). |
| Waking up bloated | Aerophagia (swallowing air) | Your pressure settings may need adjustment. Contact us to discuss "Expiratory Pressure Relief" (EPR) settings. |
3. Cleaning & Maintenance Schedule
- Daily: Wipe the mask cushion with a damp cloth or CPAP wipe. Empty the water chamber and let it air dry.
- Weekly: Soak your mask, tubing, and water chamber in warm, soapy water (mild, scent-free dish soap). Rinse thoroughly.
- Every 2 Weeks: Check and replace the disposable white filters.
- Monthly: Deep clean the headgear and inspect all parts for tears or stiffness.
4. Digital Support Apps
Stay connected to your data! Download the app for your specific machine to track your Sleep Score every morning:

Inspire Device Information
How Inspire Therapy Works
- Inspire is an FDA-approved OSA treatment that works inside your body while you sleep. It gently stimulates the hypoglossal nerve to keep your airway open.
- No mask required. You simply click a remote to turn the therapy on before bed.
What to Expect After Activation
- Acclimation Period: We start at a low level and gradually increase strength over several weeks as your muscles adjust.
- You will feel a gentle pulse or slight tongue movement. It should never be painful.
Using Your Inspire Remote
- Turning it On: Press and hold the "On" button when ready to sleep. You will feel a confirmation pulse.
- The Delay: Your device has a start delay (usually 30 minutes) to allow you to fall asleep before stimulation begins.
- Adjusting Strength: Only use the + or - buttons as directed during your titration appointments.
When to Contact Your Provider
- Persistent tongue soreness or "biting" of the tongue
- A noticeable change in sensation (feels weaker or significantly sharper)
- Bed partner notices continued snoring or gasping while the device is active
Sleep Apnea & Veterans Advocacy
The Connection: Sleep Apnea and Military Service
- The "Nexus" Requirement: To receive VA benefits for sleep apnea, you must prove your condition is either directly caused by service or secondary to another service-connected condition (PTSD, Anxiety, Sinusitis, etc.).
- Why it Matters: Sleep apnea is one of the most commonly denied VA claims due to lack of specific medical rationale. A high-quality IMO provides the "missing link" for your claim.
Secondary Conditions & Aggravation
- Mental Health Links: Strong clinical link between PTSD/Anxiety and sleep apnea, often exacerbated by medication side effects or physiological stress responses.
- Respiratory Links: Chronic Sinusitis, Rhinitis, and PACT Act-related conditions can significantly aggravate or cause obstructive sleep apnea.
Veteran Support Services
- Clinical Nexus Letters: Thorough clinical evaluations and nexus letters for Veterans seeking service connection for Sleep Apnea.
- The Process: Comprehensive chart review and a detailed medical opinion based on current VA rating criteria and clinical literature.
- Proven Success: Over 20 nexus letters successfully authored resulting in granted service connections.

GLP-1 Medication Education
- Administration: Typically once-weekly subcutaneous injections. Rotate your injection site (thigh, abdomen, or back of arm) each week to prevent skin thickening.
- Managing Nausea: Stay hydrated and focus on small, frequent meals. Avoid high-fat or greasy foods in the 24 hours following your injection.
- Satiety Cues: GLP-1s slow gastric emptying. Stop eating as soon as you feel full to prevent discomfort or reflux.
- Consistency: Take your medication on the same day each week. If you miss a dose by more than 5 days, skip it and resume on your next scheduled day.
